Participants must successfully complete the P3O® Foundation Exam prior to attempting the P3O® Practitioner Exam.

By the end of the Foundation course students will be able to:

• Articulate an overview of different ways a P3O model can add value;
• Recall and understand key reasons and benefits required to get senior management approval for a particular P3O model;
• Identify the different P3O models and the need to adapt to the organisation’s needs, taking account of the organisation’s size and Portfolio Programme and Project Management Maturity;
• Identify the key elements of a plan to either implement or re-energise a P3O;
• Recall the different purposes of a range of tools and techniques required in the P3O; and
• Be fully prepared to undertake the Foundation exam.

By the end of the Practitioner course students will be able to:

• Build on their Foundation-level understanding of the principles and terminology of P3O best practice and be able to demonstrate that they have a full understanding of how to justify, build and manage a P3O;
• Define the business case to get senior management approval for the P3O;
• Build the right P3O model to adapt to the organisation’s needs, taking account of its size and Portfolio Programme and Project Management maturity;
• Plan the implementation of a P3O;
• Understand how to use the tools and techniques described in P3O in running the P3O model and shaping the portfolio of programmes and projects; and
• Be fully prepared to undertake the Practitioner exam.

The Foundation Course covers:

• P3O Overview & Principles;
• P3O Models and Tailoring;
• Implementation of a P3O model;
• Tools and Techniques; and
• Roles & Responsibilities.

The Practitioner course is scenario-based and focuses on the application of P3O under different programme environments and scenarios. Review and revision sessions of all P3O elements are included throughout the training.
The Practitioner course prepares participants to undertake and pass the P3O Practitioner Exam. The Practitioner level qualification aims to measure whether the candidate has sufficient knowledge and understanding of the P3O guidance to apply and tailor it to a given scenario situation.

PMO and P3O leads and staff, transformation and delivery leaders, and anyone responsible for setting up or improving a project, programme or portfolio office.

Foundation:

• Multiple choice
• 30 marks required to pass (out of 50 available) – 60%
• 40 minutes duration
• Closed-book

Practitioner:

• Objective testing based on a case study scenario
• 35 marks required to pass (out of 70 available) – 50%
• 2.25 hours duration
• Restricted open book – The P3O Manual may be used in the exam

Students will be provided with:

• Access to an electronic version of the manual;
• Access to electronic versions of sample exam papers (including answers);
• Printed copy of a student workbook; and
• Access to electronic version of presentation slides.

A hardcopy version of the manual can be purchased at an additional cost.

What’s the difference between this and the online course?
This is trainer-led and includes both Foundation and Practitioner. The online course is self-paced and Foundation only. Choose this if you want the full certification and live guidance.

Can I take Practitioner without Foundation?
You need P3O Foundation before sitting Practitioner. The combined 5-day course covers both; if you already hold Foundation, you can take the 2-day Practitioner.
