Case Study

Access Canberra Builds Enterprise-Wide Project Management Capability

Access Canberra

Access Canberra delivers more than 450 services to the Canberra community and administers over 110 pieces of legislation across areas including building, transport, environment, liquor and trade. The organisation’s project environment is highly varied, spanning policy initiatives, regulatory activities, business improvement projects and major ICT-enabled transformations.

Recognising the need for a common project management language and consistent delivery practices, Access Canberra partnered with Certitude Australia to design and deliver a highly contextualised project management capability program. The initiative combined Project Management Fundamentals training, instructional design and internationally recognised project management certifications.

As a result, Access Canberra established a stronger foundation for project delivery capability across multiple teams and business functions.

The Challenge

Access Canberra operates across a broad range of service delivery, regulatory and policy environments. Consequently, project teams manage initiatives ranging from relatively small operational improvements through to complex multi-year programs.

This diversity created an opportunity to establish consistent project management practices and improve capability across the organisation. Furthermore, learning solutions needed to be practical, relevant and aligned to Access Canberra’s own governance processes and workplace realities.

The objective was not simply to provide training. Instead, the focus was on developing skills that participants could immediately apply in their day-to-day roles.

The Solution

Certitude worked closely with Access Canberra stakeholders to design and deliver a capability development program aligned to the organisation’s environment and project delivery needs.

Project Management Fundamentals

Certitude developed a customised Project Management Fundamentals workshop designed specifically for Access Canberra.

Rather than relying on generic project management examples, the program incorporated:

  • Access Canberra terminology.
  • Internal governance arrangements.
  • Project and risk management processes.
  • Organisation-specific case studies.
  • Workplace application activities.

As a result, participants could directly connect the learning content to their own projects and responsibilities.

Blended Learning and Workplace Application

The program included supporting eLearning modules that prepared participants before attending workshops. Furthermore, learners received practical guidance on how to apply the concepts within their workplace environments.

This blended approach helped maximise engagement and improve the transfer of learning into everyday project activities.

Advanced Capability Development

In addition to foundational project management training, Certitude delivered PRINCE2® Foundation and PRINCE2® Practitioner certification pathways to support the development of more experienced project professionals. Consequently, Access Canberra established a structured capability pathway supporting both emerging and experienced practitioners.

The Outcomes

The partnership delivered sustainable project management capability outcomes across Access Canberra.
