Gold Coast City Council Strengthens Project Management Capability Through a Structured Learning Pathway
Gold Coast City Council
As one of Australia’s largest local governments, Gold Coast City Council delivers a diverse portfolio of projects and initiatives that support a rapidly growing community. To continue delivering successful outcomes, the organisation recognised the importance of developing a workforce with strong project management capability.
Gold Coast City Council partnered with Certitude Australia to create a comprehensive project management learning pathway that combined Project Management Fundamentals training with nationally recognised Certificate IV and Diploma of Project Management qualifications.
Through a long-term capability development partnership, Certitude helped build project management capability across multiple teams while ensuring the learning remained relevant to the Council’s operating environment.
The Challenge
Local government organisations manage a wide range of initiatives, including infrastructure upgrades, community projects, technology deployments, operational improvements and strategic transformation programs.
As project delivery responsibilities expanded across the organisation, Gold Coast City Council identified the need for a consistent approach to project management. Furthermore, the Council wanted to provide employees with a structured pathway that could support both developing project practitioners and experienced project professionals.
Traditional training programs often struggle to connect learning with workplace realities. Therefore, the Council sought a learning partner capable of delivering highly contextualised training and qualifications that reflected the challenges, governance requirements and operational environment of local government.
The Solution
Certitude worked closely with Council stakeholders to develop a tailored project management capability framework that supported learners at various stages of their professional development.
Project Management Fundamentals
The learning journey commenced with Project Management Fundamentals training designed to establish a common understanding of project delivery principles and practices.
Participants developed practical skills in project planning, stakeholder engagement, scheduling, governance and risk management. Consequently, they gained a stronger foundation for participating in and leading projects.
BSB40920 Certificate IV in Project Management Practice
The Certificate IV pathway focused on developing practical project management skills that participants could immediately apply within their workplace.
Importantly, Certitude contextualised the learning materials, examples, case studies and assessment activities to reflect the Council environment. As a result, learners could directly connect the qualification requirements to real projects and workplace responsibilities.
BSB50820 Diploma of Project Management
The Diploma of Project Management provided experienced project practitioners with more advanced skills in leadership, governance, planning, stakeholder engagement and project delivery.
Furthermore, the program encouraged participants to apply concepts within their own projects, increasing both engagement and workplace relevance.
The Outcomes
The partnership delivered measurable project management capability outcomes across the organisation.
